For Lynne and Malcolm, the decision to move into a retirement village wasn’t a last resort – it was a planned and conscious choice to simplify life and embrace a new way of living.
“The property we had was two storeys and way too big,” Malcolm shares.
“We could have moved to a smaller place, but we thought, no, we’ll skip that step. Go straight to here.”
That “here” is The Bayview by Oceania, a place they knew would be home. “It probably happened a little quicker than we would have thought,” says Lynne, “but yeah, we’ve made the right move. Absolutely.”
Like many retirees, downsizing was their biggest hurdle. 'Moving from a house to an apartment, it was the downsizing," Malcom admits. " That was the biggest thing." But, now, as Lynne reflected on what they left behind, "Everything we got rid of, I haven't really missed."
What they’ve gained is freedom – and fun. Whether it’s Lynne delivering a “magic bowl” during Friday bowls, or playing pool in the lounge with their grandsons, life at The Bayview is full of moments that have made it all worth it. “Our granddaughter’s only 14 months old and she loves the swimming pool,” says Lynne.
Even Lynne’s shift work wasn’t an issue. “That was my biggest concern – coming home at midnight,” she says. “But it’s very well lit at night. I feel totally safe.”
What they love most is the flexibility and ease of village life.
You can lock and leave, "Lynne notes ' go on holiday, and everything's safe.' Malcolm adds, 'No lawns to mow, no hedges to chop. Just don't realise how much time that all took.'
Now, they’re spending more time doing what they love – like reading. “I’ve read a few more books than I normally would,” Malcolm says with a grin. Reflecting on their choice, there’s no doubt in their minds.
“We’re very happy that we’ve moved to The Bayview,” says Lynne. “And the longer we’re here, the more we think that.”
Malcolm agrees: “Whatever she says, I agree!”
